thanks for your question. The original menaing of cult is : " a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies." (Thanks to dictionary.com). Based on this definition, and religious group could be called a cult. You are right though in that the word cult has developed other meanings, and for this reason it is not commonenly used.
Scientology is a religion, and was clarified as such by an Australian High Court decision in 1983 in which it was stated, "For the purposes of the law, the criteria of religion are twofold: first, belief in a Supernatural Being, Thing or Principle; and second, the acceptance of canons of conduct in order to give effect to that belief, though canons of conduct which offend against the ordinary laws are outside the area of any immunity, privilege or right conferred on the grounds of religion" (High Court of Australia, 1983)
Without any question, Scientology is a religion. Scientologyists believe that man is a spiritual beinbg who has the potential to rise to greater heights, ability and awareness. It has as its purpose the intention to help others.
